Beis (Japanese: ベイス, Hepburn: Beisu; died May 998) was the Lord of the Land of Sands in the late 10th century. He met his demise at the hands of the Intoner One.

History

Life

Beis was the Lord of the Land of Sands by the year 998. He was a cruel lord to his people who stole children to make them into dolls and decorations.[1.3]

Death

In May of 998, Beis' castle was besieged by a group of five magical girls known as Intoners. His servant Partition informed him of the invaders, and was authorised by Beis to deploy Chimeras to deal with the situation.[1.3] However, after seeing them, Beis hoped to kill the Intoners himself, and fought them using his Golem. Unfortunately for him, the Intoners managed to outmatch him and destroyed his Golem. In his final moments, Beis begged for mercy, but One, the Intoners' leader, showed him none. Instead, she caved in his skull with a swift punch.[1.1]

Legacy

Beis was eventually replaced by the Intoner Two who became the new ruler of the Land of Sands. His obsession with making dolls was influential on the Intoner Three who had developed a similar interest. The Intoner One would also go on to use Golems in combat later in life.

Characteristics

Appearance

Beis was a man of Asian descent. His hair was black and he had a bowl cut. He had a hunched back and a thickset body. He looked like an old man despite not being that old.[1.2]

Personality

Beis was a ruthless man who made dolls and decorations out of the skin, bones and hair of children. He also ordered his servant Partition to create Chimeras out of people's bodies.[1.3]

Abilities

Beis rode atop a giant Golem when engaging others in combat. The Golem was powered by his magic.[1.2]

Behind the scenes

Etymology

Beis is Spanish for beige. This follows the theme of the Lords of the Lands being named after colours.

Fan translations

Fan-made translations of Drag-On Dragoon Utahime Five have previously translated the name incorrectly as "Bass."

Trivia

  • Beis is the only Lord of the Land never depicted in colour. The other three lords appear in colour on the cover of Volume 2 of the manga.

Notes

  1. Although May is not given as the current month in the manga, Yoko Taro's Chronology shown during the NieR 10th Anniversary stream places the events of Chapter 6 and onwards on June 6, 998. One is said to have slept for a month after her battle with Bartas, meaning the events of the early chapters must have taken place in May.
