Cerulea (Japanese: カエルラ, Hepburn: Kaerura; lit. Caerula; died June 6, 998) was the lady of the Land of Seas and leader of the landed lords in the late 10th century.

History

Life

It is unknown when exactly Cerulea was born.[1.1] Partition, who would go on to serve Lord Beis, used to be her magic student. She eventually became the lady of the Land of Seas and the leader of the landed lords. At some point, she sought to obtain the power behind Mercury's Door in the Cathedral City. The first wall leading to the door had already eroded by the time she found it, and she broke down the second wall herself, where she found Baltas, a mechanical humanoid she employed as the lords' enforcer.[1.1] However, she was unable to destroy or open the door itself.[1.1]

Death

On June 6, 998, Cerulea made her way to the Cathedral City alongside her student Gray, lord of the Land of Mountains, as well as his son Shahor, lord of the Land of Forests. Together, they sought to open Mercury's Door to obtain all the world's knowledge and power, as well as to avenge Beis, former ruler of the Land of Sands.[1.1] To that end, Cerulea told Baltas to open the door. She was shocked when he disappeared.[1.3]

When the magical girls known as Intoners arrived to also open the door, the landed lords ambushed them. However, when Mercury's Door was shattered by Intoner One's Power of Song, the black sludge from beyond it proceeded to use the dead Intoners to summon daemons.[1.4] After Gray was killed by the daemons, Cerulea protected his son. However, she soon revealed her real intentions for saving him; she ripped out his youthful heart in order to restore her own beauty and power, killing him.[1.5] She was killed soon after by Partition, her former student, who had sided with the Intoners.

Legacy

For a while after Cerulea's death, the people of the Land of Seas remained unaware of it.[3][3.1][2.1] The deaths of the landed lords were only made public in January 999, when Intoner One triumphantly returned to the Cathedral City, having conquered all of Europe.[2.1] Cerulea was replaced as lady of the Land of Seas by the Intoner Five. Five initially kept the dresses and jewels Cerulea had in her castle, but later sold them, both due to outgrowing them and wanting to purchase new ones from eastern lands.[4][4.1][4.2]

Characteristics

Appearance

Cerulea's real face.

Cerulea was a captivating beauty who wore gorgeous dresses. She wore high heels despite their impracticability in combat. She also often had a fan as an accessory.[1.2] She had dark blue hair she wore in a ponytail with two braids framing the sides of her face.

However, Cerulea was actually much older than she seemed, and had to sustain her youthful appearance using magic.[1.5] If she was drained of her magic, she would begin to look like an old hag.[1.5]

Personality

Cerulea was self-serving, seeking above all to have power over others. She had no issue with sacrificing Shahor in order to further her own power.[1.5]

Abilities

Cerulea was an extremely powerful magic user. Her weapon of choice was a whip which she further enhanced with magic. She could rip out hearts to steal magic power and youth from others.[1.2]

Behind the scenes

Etymology

Her localised name, Cerulea, is the feminine form of ceruleus. Her Japanese name, Caerula, is the feminine form of caerulus. Both are Latin for "having the color of the sky; blue or greenish-blue; cerulean, azure." This follows the theme of all original Drag-On Dragoon Utahime Five characters being named after colours.
