The sludge spills forth.

The black sludge (Japanese: 黒いドロドロ, Hepburn: kuroi dorodoro) was an entity sealed behind Mercury's Door in the Cathedral City. It was a flower which called out to the Intoners in order for them to release it.

History

Imprisonment

It is unknown who sealed the black sludge behind Mercury's Door or why.[1][1.1] The sludge was imprisoned behind three layers of wall and guarded by Baltas, a mechanical humanoid with regenerative powers. In time, people came to believe that what was behind the door was all the world's knowledge and power.[1.2] The leader of the landed lords, Lady Cerulea, was eager to open the door.[1.2] The first wall had already been destroyed by the time she found it, and she managed to destroy the second wall herself. She was unable to destroy the third wall with the actual door however, but she did find a sleeping Baltas, who she recruited as an enforcer for the lords.[1.2]

Freedom

On June 6, 998, Lady Cerulea returned along with Lord Gray and his son Lord Shahor to try and open the door. She gave Baltas some Old World writing to speak into a nearby terminal, but his voice data was deemed incorrect. He was therefore teleported away.[1.3] Later, the Intoner sisters arrived in the Cathedral City, also with the goal of opening the door. When Intoner One touched the door, she had a vision of the black sludge.[1.4] Before she could fully process what she had seen, the sisters were ambushed by the landed lords.[1.4] The lords made quick work of the Intoners, killing Three, Five, and Four while fatally injuring Two. Cornered and desperate, One began to sing. Her song shattered the door and unleashed the black sludge within.[1.5]

Defeat

The sludge gathered the dead Intoners. It mended them and used their Power of Song to summon daemons while sealing Intoner One in a sphere.[1.6] Gray was subsequently killed by the daemon Armisael.[1.6] Cerulea soon turned on Gray's son Shahor, killing him to become more powerful. This was short-lived, as she too met her end moments later. Her end came at the hands of Partition, her former student and servant to the Intoners.[1.7] One was eventually freed from the influence of the black sludge by her dragon friend Gabriella.[1.7] The sludge began gathering all the daemons it summoned into itself and launched an attack against One, who was able to block it with her magic.[1.7] As the sludge forced the dead Intoners to sing, they all grew up at an accelerated rate, becoming adults.[1.7] Afterwards, the sludge formed into the shape of a black flower.[1.7]

The black sludge is destroyed.

Zero, the eldest Intoner, arrived just in time. She used her powers to create the disciples, who weakened the flower's power. Her dragon companion Michael then blasted the black flower with dragonfire, destroying it once and for all.[1.8]
