Baltas (Japanese: バルタス, Hepburn: Barutasu) was the humanoid guardian of Mercury's Door.

History

Discovery

Baltas appeared in the world during the Cataclysm along with the rest of the Cathedral City. At some point, he was found sleeping near Mercury's Door by Lady Cerulea of the Land of Seas.[1][1.1]

Hunting the Intoners

After his awakening, Baltas acquired a faerie companion and became an enforcer for the landed lords. In May 998, he was sent out to hunt down the Intoners after they killed Lord Beis of the Land of Sands.[1.2] He fought Intoner One and a nearby dragon who got dragged into the conflict. One eventually managed to best him using a dragon fang while she was possessed by her Power of Song.[1.3]

Despite this, Baltas was able to regenerate his body, emerging from the carnage as a young boy. This forced One and her new dragon friend to flee.[1.3]

Return to Cathedral City

One month later, on June 6, 998, Baltas arrived in the Cathedral City as requested by Lord Gray of the Land of Mountains.[1.1] He was subsequently handed some Old World writing by Lady Cerulea, who instructed him to read it while interacting with Mercury's Door. When Baltas followed her instructions, a panel near the door opened up, where a projection of the woman known as Accord appeared. The projection informed him that his voice data was incorrect, after which he was promptly teleported away.[1.4]

While Baltas was gone, Intoner One and her sisters arrived in the Cathedral City as well. After a fight with the landed lords, One managed to shatter Mercury's Door with her song, and the Intoner Zero destroyed the black sludge that emerged from behind it.[1.5][1.6] Baltas then reappeared in the middle of a battle between One and Zero.[1.7] Zero's dragon companion Michael recognised Baltas as being from the Old World, and admonished him for the chaos he created, as well as his failure to protect the door. Baltas lamented about how he had been guarding the door for so long that he had forgotten why he was guarding the door or who gave him the task in the first place.[1.7] With his life's duty invalidated, Baltas wished to fight the strongest opponents in the world.

Final showdown

One and Baltas would go on to have one final confrontation in December 998.[2][2.1] The exact outcome of this confrontation is unknown, but it is believed that One emerged victorious.
